If you’ve read my backstory on here, you’ll see that my working life has been a little varied and becoming a full-time drummer was not always on the cards. In early 2022 I realised I wasn’t fulfilled in my job and my passion for drumming and teaching was at a point that I felt I had no choice but to follow my gut and finally go full time. My first day as a professional drummer was the 18th of August 2022.

What does a professional drummer do?

I spend my working weeks doing a mix of teaching in schools and privately, gigging and rehearsing with a number of bands and music projects, recording a podcast and delivering drumming activities to businesses and corporate teams. I’m also conscious to try a practice every day – even if it’s only for 10 minutes but on something that I feel needs work. That said there are days when I just want to play drums and may work on learning songs or just play along to some tracks from various genres. Practice or playing, I try to have drumsticks my hand every day.

Practising What I Preach

As a drum teacher I think it’s important to be mindful of your own learning and become a good student in your own right. To this end I have sought out some drummers and teachers both close to home and further afield to get regular or one-off lessons, to broaden my perspective and develop myself as a player.

Not only is it important to continually learn and challenge my drumming skill set, but researching and implementing ways to teach and communicate drumming to students of any age and ability is also really important. This is particularly useful when facilitating group drumming activities to business and company personnel who probably don’t have any drumming experience.
